Diving sites
Blue Hole – is a submarine sinkhole (a kind of sea cave), in the coral reef of the Red Sea, in the Bay of Aqaba of the Red Sea Riviera. Situated a couple of meters from the coast, in the Eastern seashore of the Sinai Peninsula, 8 kilometers north of Dahab in Egypt, in the Ras Abu Gallum Reserve, Blue Hole resembles a sea well with 102 meters depth and diameter of 60 meters. In its wall, at the depth of 54 meters, there is an arch rock, connecting it with open water. The bottom of the gradually narrowing hole descends from 60 meters to approx. 100 meters under the gate, at some places lowering to 120 meters. Then a steep slope appears, on which one can still see lost pieces of diving equipment.
Canyon - is a sinkhole in the coral reef of the Bay of Agaba in the Red Sea, situated in the south-west coast of the Sinai Peninsula in the Ras Abu Gallum Reserve, approx. 14 kilometers north of Dahab in the South Sinai Muhafazah, in the direction of Blue Hole. Being one of the most spectacular diving sites in the region, the Canyon was named after the narrow hole in the reef.
Three pools -are a dive site located a couple of kilometers south of Dahab. Each pool is a couple of meters deep. On entering water, one has to swim through three shallow pools in the reef, filled with sand. That’s where the name of the site comes from. Behind the pools, one can find a beautiful coral garden. The sandy bottom of the sea in this area is covered by seagrass, which attracts turtles.
Lighthouse - on the right side of the descent, there is a sandy slope, where interesting marine life can be found, including scorpion fish, crocodile fish, stingrays and many others. On the left, the expanse of reef creates a labyrinth of coral towers, where one can admire an abundance of colourful fish. It’s an ideal place for night diving.
Eel Garden - the water entrance in a small lagoon, behind which one can find a huge number of sand eels living at the bottom of the sandy seafloor. When swimming to the right side, one encounters table corals between small coral towers.
Ras Abu Helal - a beautiful coral garden. At a depth of 32 meters there is a narrow canyon. Between the coastal reef and the garden, there is a sandy bottom of the sea at a depth of 5-15 meters.
Canyon Garden - inclined bottom covered with colonies of soft and hard corals. One can move from here directly to the Canyon.
Bells - another marvel of the Dahab area. To see it, one has to walk for a while, as the last car park on this path is situated ahead of the Blue Hole. A narrow cleft in the vertical reef, in some places closed from the seaside, forms a tunnel. At a depth of 28 meters it ends up with a ledge. Diving in the Blue Hole not infrequently starts here – after getting out of the cleft, one needs to move to the right and swim along the vertical reef wall to reach the Blue Hole. Getting through a 7-meter deep saddle, one will reach a gorgeous coral garden.
Ras Abu Galum - moving to the left from the entrance, through a short stretch of sandy bottom, there starts a beautiful, incredibly lively coral garden. After diving, one can rest on cosy cushions in the Bedouin village.
Mashraba - on the sandy bottom near the coast, one can admire a coral garden with sea anemones and clownfish. Further, along the coastal reef wall, one can get to the coral tower with a tunnel in the middle.
Islands - three underwater coral islands. Between them one can find a real labyrinth of hard and soft corals, as well as colonies of anemones. On the sandy bottom, ahead of the deepest island, there are table corals.
Laguna - it’s practically two dive sites in one. On the left, there is Napolean Reef, to which one can get by swimming along the reef closing the lagoon. One has a good chance of seeing the majestic Napoleon wrasses here and a wide variety of fish living on the seafloor. On the right, there is 7 Pinnacles dive site. The name refers to seven pinnacles standing out of the coral bottom of the sea. Caution – it’s better not to emerge from the water far from the reef – it’s one of the World’s best known water areas for windsurfing, so the surface might be dangerous for divers!
Southern Oasis - a small wall with many coral islands. With the charming palm tree grove at the beach it appears to be an ideal place to rest before and after diving.
Golden Blocks - sandy bottom with quite big coral towers. In between, one can find gorgonian colonies, table corals and small fields of sea grass. Deeper, the sandy bottom changes into a wall with two steep gorges.
Umm Sid - exquisite and varied dive sites. First, there is a steep gorge between the reef walls with sandy bottom. Below, there is a field of sand brittle stars. On the left, one can find many coral towers, forming a real labyrinth.
Caves - in the wall of coastal reef one can find two big caves. On the sandy bottom, far from the beach, there are coral towers that would tempt any diver. Worth admiring are bigger fish that live in this area. Gabr El Bint - one of the most charming dive sites in Sinai. Ideal for two diving sessions. On the right, one can find a real labyrinth of coral gorges and canyons, full of countless, fabulously colourful fish types. On the left side, there is a lagoon and coral garden. High probability of spotting a turtle here!
Small Blue Hole - it’s practically a virgin dive site, visited very rarely. Situated on a path to Gabr El Bint. At the coastal reef, there is a small, 15-meter deep well, connected by a gate to open water at the bottom of the sea. In the well there is a sandy bottom, outside, incredible coral formations and a wide variety of fish. The Small Blue Hole is rarely visited due to difficult access and not enough space for setting up a camp.
